Sauvignon Blanc Sparkler

“People love wine with bubbles, it makes the wine come alive “ – Rick Anderson

My last review in the Villa Maria selection is a fun sparkling Villa Maria Bubbly 2015 Sauvignon Blanc (www.villamaria.com).

This is my first time enjoying a bubbly, sparkling sauvignon blanc. Villa Maria’s Bubbly Sauvignon Blanc is a fresh, crisp wine with light tastes of melon and lime. This sparkler has a grapefruit and floral nose.

Prosecco, Champagne and Cava are the most familiar types of sparkling wines. I find that the acidity in the sauvignon blanc varietal works well with the process of creating a sparkling wine. Sparkling wine is made by a double fermentation process where the wine varietal is first fermented and then a fermentation to create the carbonated bubbles.

In 2015, the sauvignon blanc grapes in the Villa Maria vineyards were picked at varying times between March and April exhibiting various levels of ripeness. A variety of grape ripeness give varying levels of sweetness to the grapes that Villa Maria winemaker, xxx, was fortunate to work with. This sparkler was created in a frizzante style capturing slightly tart fruit flavors found in most New Zealand sauvignon blanc wines. The frizzante style is a semi-sparkling wine that means that there are light bubbles in the wine.

Villa Maria Bubbly Sauvignon Blanc would pair well with light cheeses, fruit and shellfish. This is a price friendly wine at an average of $14 per bottle. I ordered mine through smooth.com and it can also be ordered on a variety of other sites such as wine.com. Your favorite boutique wine store can also order them for you.
